"Did you see?" He asked, smiling big and pointing toward the exit doors.

"Make no mistake... I saw." I said, but it was already too late-
the mistake had been made, and the invitation had been sent.
I remember being very calm, and it's unusual for me to not lose myself in moments like this, to become the very same hateful thing I so despise.

So I made use of that calm.
"I could see the cut of your cloth by the fold or fade of your fabric... you hung our symbol in your window like it reads "SALE" in all the colors of the rainbow.

If I could carry away the pain,
I would put it in a jar by the door.
As I passed it as I left,
It would remind of how things were before.

I would take into consideration all that life has to offer.
But, to no relief abounding,
I realize only you can release my ache.
So, I give to you my hand and
Pray my heart is what won't break.

I wish one day you will pass
And shatter that jar of despair.
Then you will come back to me as if
We breathed the same air.

Even if you can't rewind, be kind
Be kind- because
I was...
...I was a broken record...
once.

Once...
once upon a living room floor, a stranger's apartment- I told you how glad I was that I got to spend these moments with you.

We were heartsleeved and high on my life in pink, drunk and drugged beyond reason, listening to music on your laptop in the last days of my final Bozeman winter.

My Dad hated Herman-

He was a dim-witted monster of a dog measuring perhaps six foot from nose to tail and resembled a black bear. He rolled in any dead thing he could find, had breath that could kill and farted constantly.

Herman was also afraid of his own shadow-

One time a storm was coming on and the thunder clapped so loud, that in a panic Herman jumped through the living room window. I always surmised that is was because he had been shot at so many times by area farmers that he just supposed it was gunfire.

Remember when we used to have adventures?

You came clean about all the games you'd been playing,
and I tried to save us.

Dangling our blackest boots all pigeon-toed pensive
over a two-story drop to the freeway below us,
you turned and said something I'll never be able
to erase or delete.

"The sail owns the rope,
but the wind owns the sail...
So hold fast
and stick to the code-
Up, Up, Down, Down, Left, Right, Left, Right, B, A, Select, Start."

Slip down with me into this bottle
Let's curse that chill away
just don't promise me forever
like it means you wanna stay.

Cynics crow "it's a disease..."
those songbirds got it wrong
Their pills will drive you crazy,
but this bottle drowns the song
and needles won't scratch our vinyl
while we're crooked as vows in wine
So glasses to the sky,
until our eyes run dry
and the word on the street is
we're doing fine

It never occurred to me as a kid that my family may be a bit unusual, growing up on that farm on Ranch Road.

I thought maybe all kids had poet mothers who had a pet turtle and went to rummage sales buying old lamp shades to plant in the yard at various stages of “growth.”

This was mom’s “shade garden.”

Didn’t everyone’s father have a pet ram that thought he was a dog, chased cars and could attack at any moment?

Love, the stars all died
before I met them-
for I have prayed
to ghosts of flame

My night was wild before She arrived
to sooth dark fabrics tame.

Like wind, She whispered over me
Her time now spent...
still, I remain.

My stars went dark before I knew her
now, I dare not speak Her name.

For the stars all died
before I saw them-
and I have prayed
to ghosts of flame.

I mourn the memory She's become,
mute tragedies which we became...
